چکیده
Poor water quality is discussed as a major factor causing a decline of brown trout populations in Swiss rivers. For our study we have chosen a river in the Swiss midlands, where the brown trout population has decreased dramatically during the last 10 yr and where feral fish have shown distinctive pathological alterations. The objective of our study was to investigate whether river water may be responsible for impaired fish health leading to an increased mortality in the river. In an active monitoring program, groups of brown and rainbow trout were exposed to polluted river water for 24 months. Fish held in tap water served as a reference. Mortality, macroscopic and histopathologic changes, and infectious agents were investigated. Compared with the reference group, high mortality rates and severe pathological alterations of the inner organs were observed in fish held in river water. Especially gills, liver and kidney of these fish showed significantly higher changes than fish from tap water. These changes were dominated by degenerative and inflammatory reactions. Additionally, several infectious agents were diagnosed in fish exposed to river water. The Published in Diseases of Aquatic Organisms (2001) 44: 161-170 2 most important findings were furunculosis and proliferative kidney disease. Brown trout seemed to be more sensitive than rainbow trout to environmental stress and infectious agents.

Meat Quality of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Brown Trout (Salmo trutta fario) Farmed in Bulgaria
Background: Fish meat is outlined with high nutritional value having essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, mineral and vitamins. In this short report, we compared the meat quality of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) farmed in Bulgaria. Methods: Ten fishes from each species were purchased from a fish farm and their morphological parameters were ...
متن کاملEffects of chloramine-T exposure on oxidative stress biomarkers and liver biochemistry of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), brown trout, Salmo trutta (L.), and grayling, Thymallus thymallus (L.)
Oxidative stress, biochemical and enzymological biomarkers were compared among rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), brown trout, Salmo trutta (L.), and grayling, Thymallus thymallus (L.) to determine the mechanisms of hepatotoxicity caused by chloramine-T bath treatment. The fish were exposed to chloramine-T at a concentration of 9 g m for 20 min three times daily every three days. The...
متن کاملProliferative kidney disease in brown trout: infection level, pathology and mortality under field conditions.
Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) is an emerging disease threatening wild salmonid populations. In temperature-controlled aquaria, PKD can cause mortality rates of up to 85% in rainbow trout. So far, no data about PKD-related mortality in wild brown trout Salmo trutta fario are available. The aim of this study was to investigate mortality rates and pathology in brown trout kept in a cage withi...

Endocrine effects in the aquatic environment are in the focus of scientists and media along with debates on the necessity of further steps in wastewater treatment. In the present study VTG responses were compared to evaluate upgrades at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). We investigated several advanced sewage treatment technologies at two WWTPs connected to the Schussen, a tributary of Lake ...
متن کاملProliferative kidney disease in brown trout Salmo trutta: further evidence of a myxosporean aetiology
Two groups of brown trout Salmo trutta L. were studied, one after natural exposure to PKD-infected waters, the other after laboratory challenge by intraperitoneal inoculation with PKDinfected kidney tissue from rainbow trout Salmo gairdneri Richardson. Subclinical PKD developed in both groups; renal intraluminal myxosporean organisms were observed in both groups. The implications of these findi...
